What is dumping load?

Dumping load is a process used in power systems to manage excess electricity when the demand is low. It involves intentionally reducing or disconnecting power demand from the grid to avoid overloading the power system. This usually occurs during periods of low demand or when there is an excess supply of electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar power. The excess power is then "dumped" or wasted, by reducing the power generation, disconnecting or curtailing supply to industrial and commercial consumers, or by diverting the power to storage or other uses such as hydrogen generation. Dumping load is typically used as a last resort, as it results in energy wastage and losses, and can increase the cost of energy production. However, it is an important tool for maintaining power system stability and preventing blackouts.
